You may have never heard this man’s name, but he is a well known person in Supreme Court and High court. He had claimed to have “thriving practice” and suppose to be very famous. Today this man was raided by the Delhi crime branch along with the IT department at his Delhi residence where they recovered 13 crores stacked in bundles of 500 and 1000 rupee and Rs 2.61 crore in new 2000 rupee notes.
Rohit Tandon, a Delhi based lawyer is the man who was caught in the IT raid. This is the third time Rohit Tandon was caught in Income Tax raid. He was first raided in the month of October, when they recovered 125 crores, two weeks back he was again raided when he was again caught with 19 crores of unaccounted money. Rohit Tandon owns the Tandon and Tandon (T&T) law firm and has many branches in Delhi. The raids were conducted in all his branch offices of Shivalik area, Lajpat Nagar and Greater Kailash-1. Cupboards and a duffels bag filled with cash was found in in T&T’s Greater Kailash office, the police is also said to have recovered a counting machine which belonged to Punjab National Bank. The IT officials now believe that many bank officials may also have involved in the conversion of black to white.
The shocking part is Rohit Tandon has now been found to have links with arms dealer Abhishek Verma who is currently on bail and senior lawyer Gautam Khaitan (arrested in the AgustaWestland scam).
The Joint Commissioner of Police (JCP), Crime Branch, Ravinder Yadav, speaking to the media said “He had been on our radar since October 6.” The police say he has always remained low profile and met all his clients in farmhouse of Chattarpur. But his connections with politicians and businessman seem to be very strong. The police also say Tandon was in touch with some high-profile defence dealers and lawyers representing defence lobbyists. “While questioning his staffers, we came to know that his parties are understated, without any glamour or Page 3 celebrities, but he is well connected. It is interesting that he knows both Bhandari and Khaitan, of the Agusta Westland” said the police.
Nobody knew about this man until recently when he bought a 12,000-sq ft residence in Jor Bagh. The deal was worth Rs 100 crore. In July 2014, Tandon had also bought a bungalow from the Ruia family via a special purpose company called Devlin Corp. Now the police say they are probing whether the stacked money belonged to Tandon or were politicians and dealers also had any share in the hidden treasure.
Tandon claims that he is a corporate lawyer, specialising in mergers and acquisitions, but records show that no big firm has hired him. So the question is how exactly did he make so much money working for no one?? His links with arms dealers have now put serious questions as to whether he is involved in high level corruption with politicians and dealers.
